Remember the earthquake in Haiti? Do you recall how you felt watching the destruction, the homeless, the lack of food and water? Now when was the last time you even thought about Haiti now that it is not front page news anymore?

Out of sight, out of mind, right? Luckily some people still have the welfare of Haiti in clear sight.

I have been contacted by a friend of mine to help promote a documentary film he is producing about helping Haiti re-build itself. Seems like a great cause to get behind.

Hands That Feed- Video Pitch from Pangea Films on Vimeo.

Hands That Feed is a documentary film exploring the agricultural collapse in Haiti, its role in the post-earthquake food crisis, and the emerging grassroots development models that seek to restore Haiti’s food supply and environment.

Hands That feed is currently fundraising, and needs your support, and help in spreading the word.

…something to think about…

Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 mins a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 mins later:
the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:
A 3 year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

45 minutes:
The musician played. Only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32.

1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ….

How many other things are we missing?

Imagine the guilt that David Kellerman was living with in order to not see any way out of his situation but to kill himself. I have often wondered what goes through someone’s mind in order for them to think that taking their life is the only option available to them.

From a logical perspective we can assume that overseeing a company, like Freddie Mac, that ripped off so many people, in what was simply a giant ponzi scheme, would be too much for anyone to bear. A system that takes from the poor and gives to the wealthy has got to be criminal at best. If I remember correctly, Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor and they considered that criminal at that time.

Maybe that is the way it is supposed to be. Instead of the wealthy taking and consuming whatever they desire, I think it is time for them to give back and start to ease the guilt they feel before they all start leaping from the windows.

If we have learned anything from the demise of David Kellerman and the collapse of some of our biggest insitutions, like Freddie Mac, we know the old boys system is flawed. It is time for a new world order.

Google Zeitgeist and educate yourself on what has led to this unfortunate turn of events.

I’m sure you have heard the story of the Canary in a Coal Mine. Miners of long ago would send a canary into the mine shaft to determine if the air was breathable. If the Canary perished they knew it was not safe to venture in themselves.

That story had me thinking about how you sensitives have created the conditions for the world to change. I think that it is the sensitive people that have made the world aware that the air is unfit to breathe and the waters too polluted to drink.

If it was not for the sensitive people warning the non-sensitives of the world that our environment was deteriorating those people would have continued to destroy it. Without you sensitives the others would have consumed the earth and all of us with it.

So I think it is advisable for sensitives to celebrate the fact that you have made an invaluable contribution to our world by having your sensitive nature. Yes there is plenty more work to be done to correct what has already been damaged but let’s give credit where credit is due.

On behalf of the inhabitants of planet earth I thank you.
